They say that that music can bring upon many emotions, as it relieved the slaves of their sorrows. It can also signal sorrow when sounded for a tragedy such as death. Music to them has a deeper meaning than just elegant noise. It connects them spiritually, with ancestors, friends, family, and can evoke emotion.
The Courier - Primary Source Analysis
In this review, a critic analyzes musical performances. You can tell it was a very elegant concert event by the way he describes the music as “delicate” and “full and rich”. This concert was likely for wealthy middle to upper class citizens of the time, given the elaborate description and the fact that the working class likely didn't have time to attend social events. This highlights the struggles of the poor and the vast difference between the lower and upper class.

This is an advertisement for a music school. You can see that the popular music of the time is violin, piano, and vocal. They didn’t have all the modern music instruments we use. The advertisement references the popular progressiveness of the time when it says a “progressive school for progressive pupils”. Both men and women could go to this school, showing the women’s rights progress.

This is a picture of the Carnegie Hall opening in New York. This photograph is significant because it was opened May 5, 1891,which is during this time period. This related to the topic because it was a huge advancement for music because it is a whole hall dedicated to the performance of music and it still stands in New York today.
Gilded Age Piano - Photo Analysis
This photograph depicts a piano from the Gilded Age. This is relates to our topic because pianos are used to create music, and this one in particular was owned by William Clark. This piano is important because it shows the advancements in music and art, it combines Renaissance motifs with other devices from British Reform. It was made in 1882.
The Fisk Jubilee Singers
In this photograph, you can see an example of the people who attend musical events. Music was mostly available to the wealthy because they had more time and spare money. This made concerts and operas social status events rather than today where everyone can access music and enjoy.
